Volvo XC60: Shattered Brake Discs at Pellon Tyres

It’s always a bit of a head-scratcher when a vehicle comes into Pellon Tyres with a rare and unusual problem. Recently, we had a Volvo XC60 roll into our Halifax garage with something you don’t see every day—a shattered brake disc. Yes, shattered! The sight of the fragmented disc was enough to make even our seasoned team stop and have a good look.

This got us thinking, How does a brake disc end up in such a state? Before we delve into the specifics of the repair and its causes, let’s take a moment to appreciate the Volvo XC60 and give it the respect it deserves. Ultimately, the Volvo XC60 is not just any car, but rather a contemporary marvel.

A Short History of the Volvo XC60-Volvo XC60 With Shattered Brake Discs

The Volvo XC60 is one of those vehicles that seamlessly blends luxury, practicality, and safety, making it a favourite among families and professionals alike. First introduced in 2008, the XC60 marked Volvo’s entry into the competitive mid-size SUV market. And what an entry it was!

The XC60 elevated Volvo’s reputation for safety to unprecedented levels. It was one of the first vehicles to feature City Safety, a groundbreaking automatic braking system that could help prevent low-speed collisions. Over the years, the XC60 has become Volvo’s best-selling model worldwide, thanks to its sleek Scandinavian design, spacious interior, and top-notch reliability.

In the UK, particularly in areas such as Halifax where versatility is crucial, the XC60 has proven to be an ideal choice. Whether you’re navigating the steep inclines of the Calder Valley or cruising on the motorways, the XC60 delivers in style and comfort.

What Causes a Brake Disc to Shatter?Volvo XC60 With Shattered Brake Discs

Now, back to the issue at hand—a shattered brake disc. It’s not a common problem, but when it happens, it’s a clear sign that something has gone seriously wrong. Let’s look at some of the possible causes:

  1. Extreme Heat Build-Up
Brake discs are designed to handle heat, but they have their limits. Repeated heavy braking, such as when towing or descending long, steep hills (hello, Halifax! ), can generate excessive heat. If the discs don’t get a chance to cool properly, they can become brittle and prone to cracking—or, in this case, shattering.
  2. Poor-Quality Brake Discs
While Volvo vehicles are known for their quality, it’s not uncommon for replacement parts to vary in standard. If the disc was a cheap aftermarket part, it may not have been able to withstand the demands of a heavy SUV like the XC60.
  3. Corrosion and Wear
The weather in our region is not particularly favourable for vehicles. Salted winter roads and constant exposure to damp conditions can cause brake discs to rust and weaken over time. If left unchecked, this can lead to catastrophic failure.
  4. Sudden Impact or Mechanical Failure
Sometimes, external damage or a malfunction in the braking system can put uneven stress on the disc, causing it to fracture under pressure. For instance, a stone or debris lodged in the brake mechanism could cause significant damage to the disc.
  5. Driver Habits
While modern braking systems are robust, aggressive or erratic braking habits can push them beyond their limits. If the vehicle is often driven hard or loaded heavily, the strain on the brakes increases significantly.

Diagnosing and Repairing the Volvo XC60

Volvo XC60 With Shattered Brake Discs
Volvo XC60 With Shattered Brake Discs

When this XC60 arrived at our garage, the first step was a thorough inspection of the brake system. The shattered disc was on the front offside wheel, and there were clear signs of extreme heat and wear. We checked the callipers, pads, and hydraulic system for any issues that could have caused uneven pressure or overheating.

The culprit? A combination of worn-out brake pads and poor-quality replacement discs fitted elsewhere. The pads had worn down to the metal, causing excessive friction and heat buildup. This, when coupled with the inferior-quality disc, was a surefire recipe for failure.

We replaced the shattered disc with a high-quality OEM part, fitted brand-new brake pads, and flushed the brake fluid to ensure the system was running perfectly. After a quick test drive (down the steep roads of Pellon Lane, naturally), the XC60 was back to its usual smooth and safe self.

Lessons for Local Drivers

If there’s one thing to take away from this, it’s the importance of regular maintenance. Brake systems are your vehicle’s most critical safety feature, and ignoring warning signs like squealing brakes, vibrations, or reduced stopping power can lead to costly—and dangerous—failures.

Steep gradients and unpredictable weather in Halifax can severely damage brakes. So whether you’re driving a Volvo XC60, a Ford Ranger, or anything in between, make sure to have your brakes checked regularly. At Pellon Tyres, we’re always happy to help with inspections, repairs, and advice to keep you safe on the road.

A Nod to Volvo

Despite its shattered brake disc, the Volvo XC60 remains one of the safest and most reliable vehicles available. Even when things go wrong, it’s built to protect its passengers, proving once again why Volvo remains a trusted name on UK roads.

If you’ve got any concerns about your brakes—or anything else for that matter—pop into Pellon Tyres. We’re here to keep Halifax rolling smoothly and safely, one repair at a time.

ABS Braking Issues with the Ford Ranger: A Trip to Pellon Tyres

When we receive a car that poses a little bit of a problem, it’s always an entertaining day at Pellon Tyre and Autocentre here in Halifax. A Ford Ranger recently rolled into our garage with a problem that caused the driver to become a little anxious: ABS braking system issues. Although the Ford Ranger is a sturdy and dependable car, even the most resilient trucks occasionally experience issues.

The ABS warning light on this specific Ranger was flashing, which is enough to make any driver stop, especially when safety is at stake. But before we get into the specifics of how we resolved this, let’s take a moment to discuss ABS brakes and the history of the Ford Ranger.

Ford Ranger ABS Brake Problems

ABS Brakes: What Are They? Ford Ranger ABS Brake Problems

One of the biggest developments in car safety is the ABS, or Anti-lock Braking System. ABS technology keeps your wheels from locking up and sliding if you’ve ever had to apply the brakes hard in an emergency. By quickly pulsating the brakes, ABS keeps the tires on the road rather than causing the car to lose traction and slide out of control. It performs exceptionally well, particularly in challenging weather conditions like rain or snow, which are common in West Yorkshire.

Around the 1990s, ABS was becoming a  feature in the majority of cars, and it has subsequently saved lives. The system is dependent on a hydraulic unit, a control module, and sensors at each wheel. The ABS warning light illuminates if one of these parts malfunctions, which is exactly what happened with this Ranger.

A Brief History: Forde Ford Ranger’s History – Ford Ranger ABS Brake Problems

For drivers in need of a dependable and adaptable pickup truck, the Ford Ranger has been a mainstay. The Ranger was Ford’s response to the rising demand for small trucks when it was first released in the US in the early 1980s. The Ranger quickly gained popularity among farmers, tradespeople, and anybody else in need of a hardy workhorse after making its way to other markets, particularly the UK.

The current Ranger has developed into a midsize powerhouse, particularly the vehicles built since 2011. Given their reputation for strength and ability, it’s no surprise that they’re frequently seen in Halifax’s rural and urban neighbourhoods. The Ranger can handle anything from muddy rural roads in the Calder Valley to towing caravans.

Identifying and Resolving the ABS Problem Ford Ranger ABS Brake Problems

Let’s get back to our workshop! We started by plugging in our diagnostic tools to check what the ABS system had to say when this Ford Ranger arrived. The front offside wheel’s faulty wheel speed sensor was discovered by the diagnostic tool. This sensor is in charge of tracking the wheel’s speed and communicating information to the ABS control module. The module activates the warning light and turns off the ABS if it notices a disparity, such as a sensor not reporting properly.

The offender? a mix of corrosion and road grime, which is not surprising considering the recent weather. The Ranger spends a lot of time on muddy roads and construction sites because its owner uses it for work on a daily basis. Any car has a difficult existence, and even the best-maintained models can experience sensor problems.

We recalibrated the system, cleaned the mounting point, and replaced the malfunctioning sensor. The ABS light vanished and the Ranger’s brakes returned to their peak performance during a brief test drive down Pellon Lane’s slopes, which is a good test for any braking system.

The Importance of ABS Maintenance

The lesson here is straightforward: don’t disregard your ABS warning light if it ever comes on. The anti-lock system’s safety net won’t be there when you need it most, but the brakes will still function. With Halifax’s combination of steep slopes and erratic weather, a properly operating ABS system might mean the difference between a safe stop and a near-miss.

We at Pellon Tyres are always pleased to assist in resolving problems of this nature. We have the know-how and resources to keep you safe on the road, whether you’re driving a Ford Ranger, a family saloon, or a vintage Rover (we still see a few of those!).

A Local Perspective

The FordThe Ford Ranger’s reputation for toughness and no-nonsense aligns perfectly with West Yorkshire’s work ethic we at Pellon Tyres take great satisfaction in being trustworthy and prepared for anything that comes in. Therefore, stop by and see us the next time your car’s ABS starts to malfunction or you simply need winter tires. One repair at a time, we’re here to keep Halifax running.

Change wipers during drier months

Good Windscreen Wipers are important.

Good windscreen wipers are important

Good windscreen wipers are important
Good windscreen wipers are important

Good windscreen wipers are important.

So when our wipers fail, we all know what a nightmare it can be.

Especially when driving your car in to the winter sun with a dirty windscreen. I am sure that it happens to us all at one time or another. Of course, we all know that the answer is:? Make sure you clean your windscreen. Including all other windows regularly and before any kind of journey.

Naturally this will prevent dirt and grime building up. Making it impossible to see. Because, your window wipers just spread the dirt and grime across your windshield. Possibly, causing obscurity and restricting your view.

Winter time brings added problems when it comes to a clean safe vision. Washer jets often freeze up in winter time. It is important for safeties sake to make sure that your washer jets are clear of any dirt or frost. Hence before setting off on your journey. Jets that be accessed can be cleared of dirt or frost by using a safety pin to clear the hole that the washer fluid comes out of.

Good Windscreen Wipers are important; make sure wiper jets are not blocked?

Some models of cars allow you to adjust the angle which the solution is fired at the windscreen (adjustable jets) So after you have cleared the washers, ensure they are at an angle that will get the best overall spray coverage. This is especially important when driving at high speeds on the highwayOther drivers have sprayed us all with their spray jets set at the incorrect angle.e.

My advice is to try and aim the jets near the lower central area of your windshield. So that even at high speeds your windshield will get necessary cover. Very often drivers spray every other car but their own?

Ice scrapers are always a handy tool to carry in your glove compartment.

This will ensure that you will be able to safely scrape all the ice and snow from your windscreen. A good recommendation is an old credit card. In fact, I have used this method myself when caught out away from home in ice and snow.

As well as scraping any snow and ice off of your windows. So, you need to make sure your washer fluid doesn’t freeze on you or worse still run out. In colder weather we have all seen how the  salt on the UK roads mixes with the rain, ice or snow. When this mixture dries, salty deposits can build up on your windscreen and obstruct your view. When your washer bottle freezes or runs out of fluid then you visibility reduces to nothing.

Good Windscreen Wipers Important: Add the correct amount of antifreeze to your washer bottle?

As a result, make sure before any journey you have a full tank of washer fluid and a suitable amount of antifreeze or solution is used. If you are not sure what to do then your local garage would be only too pleased to help you out. If it is a prolonged winter then very often you will not use water at all and just pour the concentrated solution into your washer tank instead.

As I have said earlier in the article, driving in the winter can be made particularly difficult. Especially, due to the low position of the winter sun in the sky. Often dazzling drivers. So you should take care to wear sunglasses (even in winter) pulling  down your sun visor whenever it is required.

Of course, drivers should take extra care when driving into the winter sun. Even with a clean, spotless screen. Be especially aware of any sudden braking or pedestrians. When the sun is low, which is often during the day, people are driving to or from work.

Good Windscreen Wipers are important; check before winter arrives- Good windscreen wipers are important

We have all seen drivers struggling to see through dirty windscreen. There is no excuse for it. In fact it is against the law here in the UK. Before winter approaches, I would recommend fitting new wiper blades. If you cant afford new ones then there are simply things you can do using household products. There are several things to use according to the “Tips Bulletin online magazine” Including a simple cup of water mixed with vinegar.

Of course, a regular pre-winter service on your car would ensure that your wipers and washer tank levels were topped up the correct levels. Ensuring a good start to the winter safety and driving season.

Ethan’s Skillful Handling of a Vehicle Repair in Our Halifax Garage

Eric Roberts writes about some of the work we carry out on customers cars here at Pellon Autocentre in Halifax, UK.
Hi there, to all of you beautiful Halifax people! I’m thrilled to tell you a small tale today from our little piece of Halifax, where the sound of tools clattering and humming creates a symphony as rhythmic as the rhythms of our ancient town. This isn’t just another day at my garage down Pellon Lane in Halifax, UK—one of our talented mechanics, Ethan, has transformed a standard car service into a work of art.

The main character of our tale is a local customer of ours from Southowram who, consequently, loves his Vauxhall Corsa but, however, realised it needed a little maintenance when it came into my garage. And Ethan is the ideal person to entrust it to. He is a skilled craftsman who has a talent for making cars function as smoothly as a well-cooked Sunday roast Yorkshire pudding. He is not just any technician.

To ensure the engine would run cleaner and more effectively

Ethan started with the essentials: changing the oil and oil filter. It’s similar to giving the car’s lungs fresh life. He continued by changing the air filter, which frequently becomes clogged by the dust and debris that our Halifax roads generate. The car’s engine can breathe more readily with a fresh air filter, which improves performance and fuel economy.

The spark plugs were the next item on the list. The unsung heroes of your car’s engine are these little men. After replacing the worn-out spark plugs with Ethan’s delicate touch and a trusty spark plug spanner, the Ford Focus regained its lacklustre start. It’s incredible how a tiny adjustment can have such a significant impact! including helping the environment !

However, Ethan’s efforts didn’t end there.

He filled out the coolant and other fluids and examined the tyres and brakes. This meticulous attention to detail guarantees dependability and safety. Imagine it as Ethan preparing the vehicle, rain or shine, for the fickle Yorkshire weather.

The Vauxhall Corsa was not merely serviced but rather revitalised after a few hours. It purred like a contented kitten as Ethan drove it to the top of Pellon Lane and back on a test drive. He returned with that satisfied expression that only appears when one loves and excels at what they do. The owner was pleased to learn that Ethan’s hard work had kept his car in excellent condition.

This story from our garage serves as a reminder

of the love and care we put into each and every vehicle that comes through our doors. We give every car the respect and care it needs, whether it’s a significant repair, a comprehensive service, or a fast check-up. Maintaining a portion of our Halifax community is more important than merely keeping cars in good working order.

Remember that Ethan and our staff are here to keep your car in top condition, whether you’re speeding through the city or taking the picturesque routes throughout Yorkshire. Many more happy miles of efficient and safe driving are ahead of us. I’ll see you in the garage!

The Story of How Alex Resurrected a Ford Focus at Our Halifax Garage

Eric Roberts Says

Hi there! You’re in for a treat if you enjoy motoring stories or are an enthusiast about cars. Allow me to take you behind the scenes of a recent project that happened in our beautiful Halifax, where the intricacies of car maintenance collide with the rich history of our community.

Since the loss of my dear wife Michelle, I have decided to become more proactive and spend a little more time visiting and blogging about my garage. Just the other day, I turned up with my mobile phone and took some pictures of my staff working on customer cars.

Alex is one of my long-term mechanics, and of course, he is a very experienced mechanic.Today Alex was working on a nice-looking red Ford Focus.

It began with a normal, breezy West Yorkshire morning.

Halifax’s streets were filled with people going about their daily business, and the air was clean. At that point, a Ford Focus drove into our garage. It was bright red and in good condition; indeed, it had the allure that Ford vehicles are known for. The owner, a man from the area, was eager to restore his car’s brakes to their former glory, and Alex is the perfect person to do so.

As some of you may know, Alex is somewhat of an automotive expert. His hands have worked on more customers vehicles than we’ve enjoyed hot dinners, and he has an excellent eye for detail. This Ford Focus required more than just a fast fix—a complete brake refurbishment. We’re talking about new discs and pads—the whole nine!

The procedure was quite careful. Brakes Job on Ford Focus

Alex began by evaluating the state of the old and perished brakes. It’s similar to archaeology; however, he was going through layers of deterioration rather than uncovering artefacts from the past. He discovered that the pads were completely worn out and the discs were far past their best due to years of use. It was obvious that this vehicle had seen some exciting times traversing Halifax’s hilly terrain.

Each of the new discs was spotless and shining. Brakes Job on Ford Focus

Alex fitted them with an accuracy that only came from years of practice. The pads followed, fitting snugly against the discs as though they had always been there. Seeing all the parts come together is a stunning sight, reminiscent of Halifax’s own Piece Hall makeover in that it takes something with history and breathes new life into it.

Now that the new brakes were installed, it was time for the crucial moment. Alex drove the Ford Focus to the end of Pellon Lane for a test drive. I wish you could have seen the smile that says, “It’s a job well done,” when he returned. With our tiny streets and steep inclines in Halifax, the car handled like a dream and stopped on a sixpence—exactly what you need.

Brakes Job on Ford Focus
Brakes Job on Ford Focus
There was more to this project than merely a car repair.

It was about giving someone in our community back a little bit of magic in their daily lives. This type of good workmanship fuels our enthusiasm for what we do at the garage. Every car that leaves our shop, whether it’s a Ford Focus or something else entirely, has a little piece of Halifax in it, which is a testament to the quality and care we stand for.

So keep in mind that Alex and our staff are prepared to work some garage magic on your cherished car the next time you hear a slight squeak or Noisy Car Brakes- from your car. Here in Halifax, we preserve the past by repairing cars one at a time. Be careful when driving!

Engine oils Price Hike!

Engine oils Price Hike!

Engine oils Price Hike!

So, a few days of the week then I go into my office/reception in my Halifax garage. Nowadays, I don’t do very much. Mainly keeping an eye on the phones and chatting to my staff. Most of my staff are young and we can have a laugh and a joke.

I also listen into conversations and many a time can pick up some knowledge to use in my blogs. Last week was no exception. So, the conversation turned into the massive increase in the price of oil used in car servicing.

In the old days most cars would use the same engine oil. As a young mechanic then I can remember putting the “Castrol GTX oil” in almost every car engine requiring an oils change in the service schedule.

Now, when it comes to using the right type of engine oil, you need to consider several important things. In this article, we have discussed 5 important things that can indeed help you go for the right type of oil for your car engine. This is for the DIY motorist of course. We will look online to see what any particular cars oil choice should be.

Because of environmental policies, then car manufacturers have had to develop different types of oils to work in different cars. Now many of the oils made are synthetic oils and manmade. It is important therefore that you are choosing the right type of oil. Or you can have a negative impact on the performance of your car. Possibly blowing up the engine altogether.

Importantly, apart from this, it can also reduce the life of the engine or even ruin the engine altogether.

Therefore, it is extremely important to always use the right type of oil. Read on to find out more. Here at Pellon Auto Centre we only use the most up to date information from a leading automotive information website.

  1. Car series and manufacturer

So, if you are looking up the oil recommendations for your car, you should make and model of your car. Because we are professionals then we are able to enter the cars registration number to get a more accurate specification of the oil we should be using.

  1. Driving environment

You should also consider your driving environment when making a choice. For instance, you may have a hot or cold climate. Similarly, road conditions may vary. You may have to drive on paved or unpaved roads on a regular basis.

Based on these factors, your car engine will have to tolerate different levels of strain. If you drive on unpaved roads, you will have to change engine oil more frequently. Some types of oils are designed to reduce the strain on your engine.

  1. Engine oils Price Hike-Types of oil

After you have considered the make and model of your car engine, you can go for either a mineral or synthetic oil. Each type has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. For example, synthetic oils cost more money but may last longer.

  1. Viscosity grade

If you compare different products, you will find different codes and letters written on the labels. However it is becoming more and more complicated for the regular DIY and more expensive.

Engine oils Price Hike

Different grades and viscosity-  Engine oils Price Hike

These numbers tell you about the viscosity grade and the resistance of the oil to flow. Now, this is an extremely important factor to consider after driving and climate conditions.

The letter “W” refers to winter. In other words, it tells you how the oil will perform in cold weather. The second number tells you about the flow of the oil at normal operating temperatures.

Normally, low viscosity oils are thinner and provide greater protection for your engine in cold weather. On the other hand, high viscosity oils offer greater protection in hot weather. Therefore, it is important to get familiar with the viscosity grade of the oil before making your purchase.

Shock of rising engine oil pricing-Engine oils Price Hike

The shock came when I was told about the massive rise in costs with the Engine oils Price Hike, we use to service your cars and vans. Not too long back, we could buy barrel of oils for £95 if say we bought four barrels. Now the price has shot up to £450 a barrel.

How silly is this!

The most popular oil we buy in barrels is the 5W30 oil. The other variations are bought in smaller quantity plastic barrels, for storing convenience. After the price shock I decide to have a shop round for the best price.

So, now we buy our oils form a local company who started in oil back in the 1800,s when oil was used in the great textile mills of West Yorkshire. Then known as “Squire Radcliffe’s” and now use the name of “SARS Lubricants” Ltd. With nearly 200 years’ experience in oil quality. I have recently heard that there is yet another Engine oils Price Hike, in the offering! Oil producing Arab countries are lining up with Russia against the Wests climate change programme. So, depleting the amount of oil they will have to buy.

How Air Filters Work

How Air Filters Work

How Air Filters Work
How Air Filters Work

How Air Filters Work

Chevy High Performance Magazine

For performance air filter manufacturers like Air aid, determining the ideal filter design for each vehicle application is a balancing act between optimal flow and packaging constraints.

EricRoberts‘s insight:

What do CAR AIR FILTERS DO?

So, as we all know, All filters are very important parts of your cars performance system. They help your engine breathe easily by filtering out the dirt and dust that enters your car engine. The car engine sucks in tremendous amounts of air. Importantly, this air must be perfectly clean.

It is amazing what the engine will sink in. Especially in summer! Of course, it sucks in millions of insects and dust particles. Including in autumn and winter!

So, apart from dirt and grime, How Air Filters Work

The engine sucks in leaves. Even water from the winter rains. All these things can end up in the engine compartment and eventually be sucked into the inlet ports. But your air filter stops all this from happening.

The cabin filter is most often encased in a plastic holder, or older cars could be made of metal. This casing is a secondary filter safeguard and is sometimes they are shaped like kitchen pans, with the air intake looking like the pan handle, but the more modern cars have them shaped to fit in with the engine compartment. The plastic box has its own filter slits which helps trap larger objects such as leaves.

Air Filters

It is therefore very important to have your car serviced at regular intervals and to make sure that the garage changes the oil and other filters by asking them to see the old ones when you pick the car up. If you do not change the air filter, it will slowly clog up with dirt and starve your engine from oxygen.

This will hamper the performance of your car. The biggest problem is in Fuel-injected cars, because a dirty oil filter will hamper the performance of your car. It is great when a customer has just had his car serviced and notices the difference in the cars performance, this is usually because of the new air and oil filters.

Of course, all  filters are manufactured by many different companies, but here in Halifax, UK we use quality replacement filters on all models.

When I was training as a junior mechanic

I always dreamed of having a Jaguar car. Unfortunately, I had to wait fifty years for my dream to come true.  Jaguar is one of the most recognisable names in the history of the automobile industry. Of course, has consistently been at the vanguard of innovation in automotive design and engineering. Jaguar is a company that has a long history of invention and pushing the limits of what is possible in the automotive industry. The company is most well-known for producing high-performance automobiles that are also a luxury.

The implementation of disc brakes across the entirety of Jaguar’s model line up. Hence, is widely regarded as one of the company’s most important technological leaps forward. Jaguar was the first major manufacturer to embrace the braking system that they had played such a significant role in designing. While they were not the first company to make disc brakes a standard feature on their vehicles, they were the first company to do so.

first Jaguars had drum brakes

The manufacturer Jaguar realised the limitations of drum brakes, which were the normal braking system of the time, and began development of disc brakes in the early 1950s. Drum brakes were the conventional braking system of the time. Drum brakes were not reliable in terms of their ability to stop the vehicle and were prone to failing under heavy use. Disc brakes, on the other hand, provided superior stopping force and were less likely to fade over time. Of course, it is more suitable for the powerful Jaguar models to come.

Norman Dewis, a Jaguar engineer and racing driver, was the driving force behind the company’s development of disc brakes. Dewis put in countless hours to improve and perfect the technology. Thus, by 1952, Jaguar was using disc brakes on their C-Type racing car. This achievement is largely credited to Dewis. The technology was an instant hit. Importantly, Jaguar’s use of disc brakes helped the company win the renowned Le Mans 24-hour race three times between 1955 and 1957. These victories took place between 1955 and 1957.

Jaguar’s Mark 2 was the first production vehicle to feature disc brakes when it was released in 1958 ( I was 10 years old at the time). The Mark 2 was a luxury sedan that offered exceptional handling and braking performance. As a result, it was very popular not only among automotive enthusiasts but also among the general public. Disc brakes eventually became a standard feature across the whole Jaguar product line. Including the venerable E-Type sports car, which Jaguar introduced in the 1970s.

Jaguar introduces disc brakes- Jaguar Brake Discs

The introduction of disc brakes by Jaguar. Hence, marked a significant advancement for the automobile industry as a whole. This innovation replaced drum brakes, improving both performance and safety. But also paved the way for development. Including other more advanced braking systems such as anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control.

It is vital to recall the significance that Jaguar had in the development and adoption of disc brakes, even though practically all modern cars come equipped with them as standard equipment. Jaguar’s position as a firm that was driven to innovation and perfection was cemented when they became the first major manufacturer to implement disc brakes throughout their whole range of cars. This earned them the title of “first to adopt.”

In conclusion- Jaguar Brake Discs

the introduction of disc brakes by Jaguar was an important turning point in the annals of the history of automotive engineering. Jaguar was the first major manufacturer to adopt the braking system that they had played such a significant role in developing across their entire range of models.

While they were not the first company to make disc brakes a standard feature on their vehicles,. So, they were the first company to do so across their entire product line. Jaguar has become one of the most recognisable and well-respected automobile companies in the world. Thanks in large part to its unwavering dedication to technological advancement and technical mastery.

What causes Brake Discs to Wear out

What causes Brake Discs to Wear out

What causes Brake Discs to Wear out

Unfortunately, I remember the days before brake discs were fitted to our cars. In fact, brake shoes were the norm for most regular car models. Indeed, my first encounter with disc brakes was on a Jaguar belonging to the son of a wealthy millowner. We used to service his vehicles, and the Jaguar was one of them. However, as an apprentice, I never got to touch the car. But I remember being shown how the disc system worked.

Hence, It was explained to me that brake discs are subjected to constant friction and heat during the braking process. However, over time, the repeated exposure to these elements can cause the discs to wear out. In addition, other factors that can contribute to brake disc wear include:

Driving Style: What causes Brake Discs to Wear out

Accordingly, aggressive driving habits such as frequent hard braking and riding the brakes can accelerate the wear of the brake discs. (Boy racers come to mind.)

Driving Conditions

Driving in stop-and-go traffic, on mountainous terrain, or on rough roads can cause excessive wear on the brake discs.

Poor Quality pads: What causes Brake Discs to Wear out

So this along with corrosion is the most common cause for disc wear. Low-quality brake pads can cause uneven wear on the brake discs, leading to premature failure.

Corrosion

Exposure to moisture, salt, and other environmental elements can cause corrosion on the brake discs, leading to accelerated wear. Especially the rear discs, that dont get as much use as the front discs.

How Can You Tell if Your Brake Discs are Worn Out?

There are several signs that can indicate worn-out brake discs, including:

Vibration; What causes Brake Discs to Wear out

So, when driving along If you feel a vibration in the steering wheel or brake pedal when you apply the brakes, it may be due to worn-out brake discs. Many of my customers think this is something to do with wheel balance. But it is a different type of vibration caused by wheel balance.

Squeaking or Grinding Noise

Yet another common cause is when the driver can hear, squeaking or grinding noises when braking. Of course, that can indicate that the brake pads have worn down to the metal and are damaging the brake discs.

Reduced Braking Performance

So, when the discs  are subjected to hours of heating then the metal changes construction and softens. When this occurs it takes longer to stop your vehicle than usual or the brakes feel less responsive. Consequently, it may also be due to worn-out brake discs.

  • Visual Inspection

You can visually inspect the brake discs for signs of wear. If the disc has deep grooves, cracks, or a blue colour, it may be due to excessive heat and wear.

  • What Should You Do If Your Brake Discs are Worn Out?

If you suspect that your brake discs are worn out, it is essential to have them inspected by a qualified mechanic. Here are some steps you can take:

  • Replace the Brake Discs; What causes Brake Discs to Wear out

If the brake discs are worn beyond their service limit, they must be replaced. It is essential to replace both brake discs on the same axle to ensure proper braking performance.

  • Replace the Brake Pads

Most commonly, then worn-out brake pads can cause excessive wear on the brake discs. Therefore, it is recommended to replace the brake pads at the same time as the brake discs.

  • Check the Brake System Components

It is essential to have the entire brake system inspected for wear and damage. Components such as brake callipers, brake hoses, and brake fluid should be inspected and replaced if necessary.

If you frequently drive in challenging conditions or want to improve braking performance. Consider upgrading to higher-quality brake components such as ceramic brake pads or drilled and slotted brake discs.

The Value of Consistent Maintenance

Keeping cars in excellent condition is nothing new to us at “Pellon Tyres and Autocentre” in Halifax, and our most recent project was a prime illustration of the significance of routine maintenance. During a 2 “full service,” a “Vauxhall Astra-J 2.0 CDTI” arrived at our workshop. Popular throughout West Yorkshire, this dependable worker is renowned for its efficiency and usefulness. However, it requires some TLC to stay functioning properly, just like any other car.

Arrival of the Astra

The aforementioned Astra-J was a well-used car that was obviously cherished by its owner, but it had not received a complete service in a while. Even though the car was still roadworthy, a closer inspection revealed the wear and tear caused by regular driving on our hilly Halifax roads and the occasional trip on the highway. Every component of the vehicle, from the brakes to the oil filters, has a function, and if it is not regularly maintained, it may deteriorate and lead to more serious issues.

What Is Covered by a Full Service?

A complete service is similar to a checkup for your vehicle. We did the following for this Astra-J:

Oil and filter changes are essential to maintaining the engine’s smooth operation. Increased wear and tear may result from dirty oil.
In order to guarantee clean air for the engine and the passengers, it is imperative that the air and cabin filters be replaced.
As a timely reminder that routine inspections might avert unexpected breakdowns, the brakes were worn but not yet at the replacement stage.

Tyre Check and Rotation: Because of our erratic weather, Halifax’s roadways may be hard on tires. Their lifespan is increased, and safety is enhanced by ensuring even wear.
Fluid Top-up: Every small detail counts, from washer fluid to coolant.
General Inspection: To make sure the vehicle was safe to drive and operating well, we inspected the belts, lights, and other parts.

The Astra was smoother, safer, and more effective when it was ready to go on the road again after a comprehensive service.

1. Improved Safety: Accidents can be avoided by identifying problems early, such as worn tires or brakes.
2. Better Fuel Efficiency: Your automobile will utilise fuel more efficiently if it has a well-maintained engine and clean filters, which is ideal for long commutes or school runs.
3. Extended Lifespan: Frequent maintenance keeps deterioration from developing into expensive malfunctions.
4. Higher Resale Value: A well-recorded service history is a huge benefit for purchasers if you ever decide to sell your vehicle.

Conditions for Local Driving-Vauxhall Astra-J 2.0 CDTI Full Service

We see it everything here in Halifax: cobblestone alleys, high hills, and erratic weather. Any car can be negatively impacted by these conditions, particularly if you frequently commute to Leeds or Huddersfield. Your greatest line of defence against the particular difficulties presented by West Yorkshire roads is routine maintenance. For instance, wintertime sand and salt may seriously damage your car’s substructure, which is why tyre and brake inspections are so important.
