Kia Optima Crankshaft Woes – A Juddering Arrival at Pellon Tyres

Well, here’s another little tale from the workshop floor, that might ring a bell for a few of our readers, especially if you’re driving one of the more modern Kia models. This week, we had a Kia Optima in the garage with, a rather nasty engine judder. The customer, a chap from nearby Mixenden, had started to notice the shaking getting worse over a few days, and it didn’t take long before he decided it needed looking at sharpish.

When he rolled into Pellon Tyre and Autocentre, it was clear, something was badly wrong under the bonnet. The whole engine bay was visibly vibrating like a washing machine on its final spin. You could hear it before he even parked up—that sort of deep mechanical rattle that gets a technician’s ears twitching. We’ve seen it before… and we had our suspicions straight away.

Straight to the Point – Kia Optima Crankshaft-Pulley

Once we got the car into the bay, it didn’t take long for Dale, to spot the culprit. The crankshaft pulley, also known as the harmonic balancer, had failed. These things are often overlooked, but they play a vital role in keeping engine vibrations in check and powering accessories like the alternator and power steering via the auxiliary belt.

In this case, the rubberbonding inside the pulley had started to break down. The outer ring was wobbling badly, throwing the belt off balance and causing that juddering sensation. Left much longer, and it could’ve snapped the belt entirely—and then you’d be looking at a dead alternator, failed power steering, and potentially more serious engine damage.

We keep a good range of tools and parts in stock, and luckily, we had access to a quality aftermarket crankshaft pulley for this particular Kia. With the help of the air tools and a bit of elbow grease from our lad Alex, we soon had the old one off and the new pulley fitted up.

Once it was back on and the belt re-tensioned, the transformation was instant. The engine ran silky smooth again—no judder, no noise, no fuss. The customer was well chuffed and even popped into the local corner shop to get us a packet of chocolate Hobnobs as a thank-you (which didn’t last long in our brew room, let me tell you).

In my opinion, other car makers will follow this, which will reduce car emissions by at least half. So, as I have said, I believe other obstacles will happen. Importantly, I just can’t see the giant oil companies giving in and reducing their oil sales to next to nothing. Either they will raise oil prices so that we cannot afford to buy fuel, or we will leave the UK entirely.

Remember that other countries are not ploughing ahead with this suicide target of stopping the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2030.

Three people perished in September 2012 as a result of a coach’s devastating tyre breakdown. The accident investigator came to the conclusion that the front axle’s 19-year-old tyre’s advancing age was to blame for the failure.

This has come as no surprise to me.

As the owner of a tyre business, I can’t help looking at the tyres on vehicles that I pass. As a Huddersfield Town fan, I often go to away matches by coach. Some of these coaches are very old indeed. The tyres can be in bad condition. Personally, I have never been on a coach with tyre problems, but I have thought on many occasions that the tyres were an accident waiting to happen.

Of course, the attached article gives all the hard details. The fact that the vehicle had tyres older than ten years makes me assume that there was some sort of accident. I really do not know!

This article is a follow-up to one that I did a few years ago. Owners of 4×4 vehicles who are unsure of which tyres to fit to their vehicles are one of the issues we face at Pellon Tyres.

These days, with the advent of “health and safety”. Naturally, we take all precautions to protect our staff. I feel that I should point out a few things when handling car batteries. So, we wear full protective gowns with gloves. Including goggles whenever we are charging batteries. Training all the staff in the procedures and first aid. This is important to us because we handle thousands of batteries a year.

Most people who have a 12-volt car Battery delivered. Firstly, we will receive the new battery in a well-packed box. So, in the tyre trade, we often come across new ideas that seem to spring from nowhere.

For this reason, I was pleased to see this video from outside of Australia. Of course, the internet has made this a small world. Therefore, we can now all speak to each other by email, and distance is no barrier.

I happen to be the owner of Pellon Tyres here in Halifax, UK. Accordingly, I like to provide the best equipment and service to my customers. Hence, over the years, I have tried many new types of services to help enhance our customers experiences. Also to keep up to date with the latest gadgets that hit the marketplace.

Nitrogen used in tyre inflation is not a new thing.

The national tyre companies were the first to use commercially. I believe that it was first designed to be used on the motorsport scene. Naturally, this is the first place that tyre manufacturers experiment with new tyres and associated products. Including. nitrogen to inflate tyres with.

I did, however, have my doubts?. Tyre companies were trying to charge extra, similar to new “tubeless valves” in the old days. During the period of my interest in the product, I asked a round various suppliers that provided the machines. Of course, this was at trade shows. I received a mixed reaction. This depended on how keen a salesman was in selling me a machine.

However, I still had my doubts as to the advantages of using nitrogen to fill tyres. In the early days of tubeless tyres, water became a problem. The compressors that we used produced water as well as air. Hence, this water would enter the tyres. This would not be acceptable. In the following years, various filter were added to the compressors and the water was filtered out. Thus producing clean air.

I eventually went against the idea of using nitrogen

only and we have had no problems whatsoever. This video endorses my decision.

I wanted to buy a 110-amp leisure battery

 Leisure Battery: When the phone rang for the hundredth time on Thursday, it was a call from a well-spoken gentleman with a well-educated Scottish accent. He wanted to buy a  leisure battery to go into his motorhome. He turned out to be head of the Devonshire Hall

Cumberland Road, part of Leeds University. The university had broken up for the Easter term and he found out that he had a dead battery and therefore required a new one.

I arranged to meet him outside the Devonshire halls at 8.30 am on the following morning with his new battery, as he said that he has a tight schedule. This is just an example of the personal service that we give to our online battery service.

He pulled out the car so that I could take a photo for my blog and gave me two old batteries for re-cycling, This was a great trip out for me (how sad).

It’s always a bit worrying when a customer brings in their car complaining of a strange noise, especially when they can’t quite figure out where it’s coming from. Recently, we had a Renault Captur come into the garage with just that issue. The driver told us they’d been hearing a knocking sound from underneath the car, particularly when going over bumps or turning corners.

Now, if you’re like most drivers, you know that feeling when something just doesn’t sound or feel right, and this was one of those cases. The customer had done the right thing by bringing it in quickly rather than ignoring it, hoping it would go away. We put the Captur up on the ramp for a closer inspection.

Finding the Culprit- Renault Captur Anti-Roll Bar Link

With a sound like this, it’s easy to suspect several different parts – suspension components, steering, or something as simple as a loose exhaust bracket. But after a thorough look, it became clear that the issue was coming from the anti-roll bar link, or as some people call it, a drop link.

Now, the anti-roll bar link is an important part of your car’s suspension system. Its job is to keep the car steady when you’re going around bends and to reduce body roll, helping with overall handling. When it starts to wear out or come loose, you’ll start to hear that dreaded knocking noise – usually when you’re turning corners or hitting uneven road surfaces. Here in Halifax, with the condition of some of our roads, it’s no wonder parts like this can take a beating!
