A Farmer Named Bow

The other day, a young farmer with the unusual name of Bow rolled up with one of his Land Rover wheels in the back of his pickup. He’d tried to change it himself after noticing it had gone flat, but the inner tube inside had already been damaged.

On closer inspection, we found the culprit – a large screw buried deep in the tread. The screw had pierced right through, letting the air out and damaging the tube before Bow could swap it over.

After checking the tyre for any other signs of trouble, we patched the tread properly, fitted a new inner tube, and got the wheel balanced and ready to go. Within a short while, Bow was back up the lane, wheel in hand, ready to refit it to his trusty Land Rover.

In my early days of blogging,. Then, I used to write about almost every new tyre that the manufacturers released. Eventually, this began to grind me down.

Most new tyres were similar to the last one or claimed to be the one that was greener than the rest. As a result, I have been selling tyres for about forty years now. In the long run, tyres are just a consumer product.

This is certainly true to an extent. Tyre companies have had to come up with different solutions in recent years, mainly due to the pressure from car manufacturers.

In turn, car manufacturers have also been under pressure from governments to reduce the emissions produced by their cars. This pressure has effected every part of the car. Including the tyres.

The 50 and 55 series tyres were introduced to fit some of the sportier cars on the market. Looks were the thing. If a car looked good on fat tyres, then that was good?

Things had to change for cars to become more eco-friendly. Tyres were being made from unusual materials to make them lighter in weight. Continental are developing the white sticky liquid from “dandelions” Strange, but dandelions have the same molecular buildup as latex rubber. Yokohama tyres are using “orange skin oils” in their tyre compound mix.

Therefore, a tyre that is lighter in weight and built with a taller overall diameter is much greener.

These tyres will go further. using less of the vehicle’s fuel. Because they are carrying less weight than there predecessors.  The European Union brought out a guideline to show which tyres were the best in each department.

The “A” is for fuel efficiency, the “B” is for wet cornering, and the “C” is in decibels for tyre noise. When the SUV market began to take off, there was a need to improve “Rolling Resistance” This was done by hardening the tyre compound.

Consequently, this had the effect of the tyres having poor cornering. Especially in wet weather. Experiments were carried out with the new materials, and “silica” would become the answer.

Now most tyres contain silica. This gives the tyres better rolling resistance and also helps the grip in wet weather situations. Companies were coming out with AA-rated tyres; the first were the Goodyear Efficient Grips, Pirelli Cinturato P7 Blue, and Bridgestone Ecopia EP001S tyres.

I could not believe my eyes when we were presented with this beautiful MGB sport car for its MOT test. So, I am just going to show the images that we took so that you can see for yourself how nice this car is.

In my opinion was one of the signs that you were doing better in life if you owned one, I had the poor relation the MG Midget. I remember working for a Dunlop tyres subsidiary at the time and the MG was fitted with 165×14 Mainly Pirelli Cinturato textile radials. The guys who owned them (it was a man’s car and not many females owned one) were mainly self-employed builders and architects, this was the car for them.

Of course, the fascinating thing to me is. So, out of the 387,000 cars produced, 90% were sold in America. Consequently, they were as popular as they were in the UK. Subsequently, these cars were built from 1962 until the last car in 1980. Hence, the first MGB GT versions rolled off the production line in 1965. As a result, by the end, over 125,000 of these splendid cars had been built. Of course, with about a third going for export.

Following on from our recent post about repairing tyres the correct and legal way, we had a perfect example come through the workshop this week — a Mazda 2 brought in by a lady from Greetland, just outside Halifax. She’d noticed that one of her tyres kept going down overnight, and rather than just keep topping it up, she sensibly brought it to us to get it checked properly.

As always, the first step was to remove the wheel from the car and carry out a thorough leak test. We use a water tank for this — it’s the best way to find small leaks that you might otherwise miss. The wheel is slowly lowered into the water and checked for any sign of air bubbles, which usually means there’s something embedded in the tyre or a small split somewhere.

Sure enough, within seconds we saw the telltale stream of bubbles. A closer look revealed the culprit — a rusty old nail stuck in the tread.

Now, not all punctures can be repaired legally. The location and size of the damage are crucial, and that’s where knowing the proper British Standards (BSAU159) really matters.

Under the UK’s legal tyre repair guidelines, punctures can only be repaired if they’re in what’s known as the “minor repair ”area”—basically the central 75% of the tread area. Anything too close to the sidewall is a no-go, as it can compromise the tyre’s structure and safety.

Luckily for our Mazda 2 customer, this nail was bang in the repairable zone — right in the middle of the tread — so we were able to carry out a proper, certified mushroom plug repair.

It’s important to stress that we never bodge or patch tyres from the outside, like some backstreet outfits might do. Those “string” or “rope” type repairs might hold for a short while, but they’re not safe or legal for road use in the UK. Here at Pellon Tyres, we always follow the correct method — from the inside of the tyre — ensuring a long-lasting, fully sealed fix.

Once we confirmed the tyre was safe to repair, Adam (our resident tyre specialist) got to work.

  1. Tyre Removed & Cleaned: The tyre was taken off the rim and carefully inspected inside and out for any hidden damage.

  2. Hole Prepared: The nail was removed, and the damaged area was drilled and cleaned to prepare for the repair.

  3. Mushroom Patch Fitted: A professional mushroom-style patch plug was fitted through the hole. This seals both the inside and the puncture channel, ensuring no water or air can get in.

  4. Vulcanising & Curing: The patch was securely bonded to the inner liner using a special vulcanising solution.

  5. Re-Balancing & Refit: Once the repair was done, the tyre was re-seated on the rim, inflated to the correct pressure, and re-balanced to make sure the car would drive smoothly again.

The wheel was then refitted to the Mazda 2, and the car was ready to roll.

Our customer was delighted — not only because she didn’t have to buy a new tyre, but also because she knew the job had been done properly, safely, and legally.

It was another busy Friday morning here at Pellon Tyres in Halifax, West Yorkshire — the kind of day when the coffee pot never cools down and the ramps are full before nine o’clock!

One of the first cars to roll into the workshop was a Nissan Qashqai booked in for a free tyre check. The customer, a regular from nearby Sowerby Bridge, mentioned that the car felt a bit off when cornering. We’re always happy to offer a free inspection because it gives peace of mind, especially before the colder weather sets in.
