Last Saturday saw yet another campervan pulling onto our forecourt for some new tyre fitting. The guy had fitted Kumho tyres in the past but was a little disappointed with the low mileage that he had achieved.

A lady customer called in with her Peugeot 206 1.4 with a couple of problems

So her first problem was that the car was difficult to start in the cold. Consequently, the battery was turning the engine over, but the engine would not fire up !

Also, when she was driving along, the engine felt to be juddering. This culminated with a warning light that had come on in the dashboard.

The engine in the Peugeot 206 1.4 is a KFU 16-valve engine. We did research into this, and we found out that this model of car is a little prone to these kinds of Camshaft Sensor Peugeot 206.

The customer left the car with us, and we pulled the car into the garage for  examination.

The first job was to plug the car into our Snap-On engine code reader. So we soon found that the code that came up was a KFU engine code. Which is related to the Camshaft Sensor Peugeot 206. The camshaft sensor is located on the rear right-hand side of the engine. Of course, it is at the side of the air box and is difficult to spot, as you can see in one of the pictures.

Consequently. this  sensor is an important part of the evolution of the modern car engine. Thus helping  your car run smoothly. Because they are hidden away, these sensors can be difficult to find. As we soon found out in this Peugeot 206.

The Camshaft Sensor Peugeot 206 operates on magnets.

Hence, collecting information about the camshaft speed of the car. So, the information that it gathers is sent to the car computer. This, in turn, works out the timing of the ignition. As a result, the timing of the fuel required by the engine is calculated. Through the fuel injection system. The data that this sensor sends is crucial. Hence, for the engine to work correctly,.

Peugeot sensors in this particular model can become weak for some reason. Sending out an intermittent signal to the car computer instead of the correct information.

Thus causing the car not to run properly, as in the case of this lady’s car. Ryan Linton then proceeded to replace the faulty Camshaft Sensor Peugeot 206 with genuine Peugeot parts. So, clearing the fault codes in the car’s computer. Of course, this did the trick, and the car was running smoothly and back to normal! a job well done.

What hit home to me was the following incident at my tyre shop in Halifax, Yorkshire, UK. A customer from Timber Merchants. Based just across the road from us. He brought his BMW in to us because the TPMS light had come on. The light showed that the passenger-side front tyre had lost some pressure.

 We found a nail had penetrated the centre of the tyre. Sticking to our policy, we explained to the guy that we did not repair Run-Flat Tyres, and therefore it would require a new tyre. The guy was given the price of a new tyre. He then took his car back across the road and parked it.

About fifteen minutes later, and to our surprise, we saw a mobile fitting van pull up, and the guy took off the wheel and repaired the tyre.

I realised it was up the guy to do what he wanted with his car, and eventually I got over it. It did open my eyes, though, to see if the run-flat tyre problem had moved on.

Run-Flat Tyres latest information

I decided to ring the technical departments up myself to get the information from the horse’s mouth, so to speak?

Out of all the tyre companies that make the Run-Flat Tyres, three companies were against repairing their Run-Flat tyres; these were Yokohama, Continental, and Pirelli. They were all adamant that they should not be repaired.

Amongst the others, BF Goodrich said that repairs were permitted under the BSAU 159 (1990) tyre law, but there could only be one repair maximum.

Bridgestone Tyres said that you could only repair their run-flat tyres if the pressure did not drop below 15 psi.

Firestone tyres are from the same company as Bridgestone, so they have the same Run-Flat Tyres specifications.

Run-Flat Tyre Repairs

Michelin tyres stated that you could repair them using the same BSAU 159 regulations as long as it was a Michelin ZP type. The only exception to this is if the

Michelin tyres state on the sidewall that “this tyre cannot be repaired“—only one repair per tyre.

Dunlop and Goodyear are now the same company, and when I called them, they said that both makes of Run-Flat tyres could be repaired to British Standard 159.

Kumho Tyres also stated that their Run-Flat Tyres could be repaired to the BSAU 159.

In line with many of the leading tyre companies, I have considered the implications, and we will not offer to repair run-flat tyres. In my opinion, this is a grey area. I am not prepared to put any of my customers at risk due to a possible tyre failure or a tyre repair failure. There are too many other considerations that come into play. My main concern is the grey area of “how much pressure the tyre loses.”.

We only have the customer’s word-Run-Flat Tyre Repairs

for the actual amount of pressure that the tyre may lose. If the tyre has been run on with little pressure in it, then it could look alright but could have material breakdown. This tyre could look fine, but it would not be safe to repair due to structural breakdown.

The Winter Contact TS 850 came in close first place, but the other big tyre companies all fared well with their winter tyre products. In snowy conditions, Nokian, Michelin, Goodyear, and Uniroyal (another product owned by Continental) were all slightly better, but they were all very close, and the  Contact TS 850 came up trumps in wet braking. This tyre has a very strong stopping capability, coming out best in wet conditions overall.

This problem is nothing new. Back in the day, when vans were becoming more popular, we had a similar problem. People who bought these small and medium vans were unsure which type of tyres to use.

Vans used for small businesses could carry some real weight. They would load their van with all sorts of equipment that was used to carry out their jobs. Caravans were also becoming more popular, but I will leave that for another article.

Our customers would always go for a cheap car tyre option and not worry about the consequences of having a tyre blowout because their van was overloaded. This also happened on caravans—overloaded caravans fitted with car tyres that had the incorrect load rating. With a little knowledge, the owners of these vans started to fit the correct motorhome tyres for the job. Vans became faster and were able to carry heavier loads, so they were fitted with low-profile tyres, and it became necessary for them to fit the correct tyres.

Enter the motorhome tyres.

The caravan people also had problems fitting the wrong tyres. I would go straight to the motorhome problem, because it is a more current problem. Because of the massive increase in motorhome ownership, there will be more motorhome/camping tyres sold.

This is something that is happening as I write this article.

The thing is, though, is that the same problem as with the early van tyres? Drivers of these vehicles want to scrimp when it comes to buying the correct tyres for the job. In my opinion, there are two options for motorhome tyres. The first is to fit a van tyre. The van tyre should be the same size, speed, and load rating as the original tyre that is being replaced.

If everything is the same, then you are within the law. Whatever you do, do not try to revert to fitting a car tyre of the same size, because the load rating will not be the same. Lower load ratings are what cause a blowout. This is one of the main reasons that you will see a caravan rolled over onto its side or in a ditch.

As motorhomes became more popular, some of the leading tyre manufacturers introduced specific motorhome tyres for camper motorhome owners. Michelin tyres, Continental tyres, and Pirelli tyres all brought out a specific niche market for camper/motorhome tyres.

When entering the camper tyre market,. Tyre makers were looking at the strong tyre casing with a high load rating, the same as a van tyre. Strong casings enable the tyre to carry much more weight. They can also cope with cornering and different terrains. After all, you can see motorhomes anywhere. Not just on tarmac roads. This rigidity comes from a stronger sidewall. As a result, it also prevents the motorhome tyres from swaying. We have all seen this when following an overloaded caravan.

My understanding is that the correct motorhome tyres are made with a different tyre compound than the regular van tyres, and this could be one of the reasons that the correct motorhome tyres a little more expensive. Certainly do not be tempted to fit regular car tyres; this has been asked of us a few times by the

owners of older motorhomes, but this is a no-go area.

In recent times (during a hot spell), Vauxhall Vectra Air Conditioning Problems

I have had a few Vauxhall Vectra cars in with the air conditioning not working.

One guy, the owner of a Vauxhall Vectra GSL, found that when he pressed the air conditioning button in the car, the revs dropped on the engine, but there was no cold air coming through into the car?

We discovered that he had a plug connection to the compressor that was not connecting properly. The compressor was failing to engage because of the faulty connector wiring. We repaired the faulty wiring, and the compressor started to engage. The system worked fine, and the customer went away happy.

Another Vauxhall Vectra came into us. Vauxhall Vectra Air Conditioning Problems

with her air conditioning failing to work. We tried to re-gas the system, but the AC system was not holding the gas. On inspection with our leak detector, we noticed that there was a hairline crack on one of the pipes that were coming from the compressor.

This pipe was causing her all the trouble. We ordered a new pipe, fitted it, and re-gassed the air conditioning system. Once again, the lady went away happy with her AC working to perfection.

The Vauxhall Vectra is also prone to having a damaged condenser.

This is located at the very front of the car and looks just like a radiator. To get to the compressor, you have to remove the whole body panel.

When the customer brought in the car, he told us that his AC was out of order. The first thing we did was to check for leaks with our special fluid. The leak test found a leaking condenser.

It appeared as though a stone had hit the condenser and caused damage. This is a common Vauxhall Vectra fault because the condenser is exposed at the front. We fitted a new condenser and re-tested the system before re-gassing it. After the re-gassing, the air conditioning

the system worked fine and the guy went away a happy bunny (the day was a scorcher)
